Spain's Newest Archaeological Wonder: The Oldest Library in Iberia

As we make our way through the rolling countryside of Córdoba, let me introduce you to Fuente Álamo, a remarkable Roman archaeological site near the town of Puente Genil. What began as a bathing complex in the first century BC was later transformed into an elegant Roman villa, and archaeologists now believe that one of its rooms may have served as the oldest known library in the Iberian Peninsula.

For many years, researchers thought that Room 10 had been a mithraeum, or sanctuary dedicated to the Roman god Mithras. A new study by scholars from the universities of Córdoba and Granada suggests, however, that the room was remodeled during late antiquity—possibly in the fourth century AD—to store and study written works. The exact date remains uncertain, but the villa appears to have flourished during the fourth and fifth centuries before undergoing further changes in the sixth century.

As we imagine ourselves stepping inside, notice the architectural clues that led researchers to this conclusion: an apse at one end of the room, rectangular niches that may once have contained shelves, semicircular recesses, a raised podium and adjoining chambers that could have been used for storage or scholarly work. By analyzing how these features fit together, archaeologists found that the layout closely resembles other known Roman libraries.

What makes this discovery especially exciting is its possible importance beyond Spain. If the researchers’ interpretation is correct, the Fuente Álamo library would not only be the oldest yet identified on the Iberian Peninsula, but also the westernmost known library in the Roman Empire and one of the best-preserved examples of its kind. It offers us a rare glimpse into the intellectual life of Roman Spain and reminds us that, beneath the quiet fields of Andalusia, extraordinary chapters of history are still waiting to be uncovered.
