As my aunt’s brother owned and managed several apartment buildings throughout the city, we were fortunate enough to settle into one of his lovely apartments, conveniently located just a short distance from the beach. What a wonderful way to begin our stay in Santander!
Our first stop was the magnificent Playa del Sardinero, an extensive stretch of golden sand that is much loved by both the locals and visitors alike. As we enjoyed a leisurely stroll along the shore, we were treated to the delightful sight of sunbathers basking in the sunshine and the irresistible aromas drifting from the nearby chiringuitos, those charming little beach bars so typical of the Spanish coastline. Just a short walk away, we came across the splendid Gran Casino del Sardinero, an architectural jewel that transports you back to an era of elegance and grandeur. ¡Qué maravilla!
Santander from the air
For those of us who appreciate nature and beautiful landscapes, a visit to the Península de la Magdalena is an absolute must. This enchanting green peninsula is home to the impressive Palacio de la Magdalena, as well as a small zoo where you can see seals and penguins. The panoramic views of the Cantabrian Sea and the distant mountains are simply breathtaking. And, of course, no visit would be complete without taking one of the delightful tourist boats. From the water, we enjoyed a completely different perspective of Santander's beautiful coastline while discovering more about the city's fascinating maritime heritage.
Next, we made our way into the city centre, where lively plazas, inviting cafés and charming little boutiques create a wonderful atmosphere. One of the highlights was undoubtedly the Santander Cathedral, a magnificent reminder of the region's rich history and architectural heritage. Its beautiful Gothic cloisters and the opportunity to admire the city from its tower made the visit especially memorable. From up there, you can appreciate the fascinating contrast between the historic architecture, the more modern buildings and, of course, the sparkling sea in the distance.
Our time in Santander was a delightful combination of relaxation, culture and discovery. From the gentle rhythm of the waves along the shore to the lively atmosphere of its streets and plazas, this beautiful coastal city has a special charm that is difficult to put into words. It offers just the right balance between the tranquillity of seaside life and the pleasures of exploring a vibrant Spanish city.
Sadly, all good things must come to an end, and when the time came for us to leave Santander, we took with us some truly wonderful memories: unforgettable sunsets over the Cantabrian Sea, beautiful architectural treasures and, above all, the warmth and friendliness of its people. ¡Hasta siempre, Santander!
